Stay Safe at Hallowe'en
Here are some ways to stay safe from the walking dead! The Parshell is a cross that is traditionally woven on Hallowe'en night, it is placed over the front door on the inside of the house, it is believed to protect the household from sickness, bad luck and evil for a year. To make one you will require two sticks about seven inches long, string and straw. Firstly, fasten the sticks together to form a cross, then moving clockwise, weave the straw over one stick and under the next, continuing like so around the cross. Do this until you are two inches from the end of the sticks, your parshell is now ready to be placed over the door. Take care though, you cannot make a parshell until the day of October 31, it will only result in bad luck.
There are other ways to keep the spirits from your door this Hallowe'en!
1. Sprinkle the children in your house with holy water.
2. To prevent being taken by the fairies, it is advisable to place a steel needle in a coat collar or sleeve, so if you are taken you can turn your coat inside out and they will no longer recognise you as the one they had taken.
3. You must not eat wild blackberries after Hallowe'en night as the puca will have spat on them.
4. Before going to bed, you must place a small portion of your evening meal outside your front door to placate the ghosts that may come to your door.
So take these precautions and have a Happy Hallowe'en!
